The Pursuit Rule will be in effect  when there is a minimum of 2m clearance on both sides of the court, from the ref stand to the closest obstruction and from the R2’s net post to the score table/closest obstruction.  REMINDER:  The Pursuit Rule will not be used if the minimum clearance exists on only one side of the court.

A ball can be retrieved from beyond the Sport Court or other portable surface ONLY IF the entire area surrounding the sport court is free of obstructions and safety hazards, including spectator seating.  This does not include the bench side of the court, of course.  Also, this area does not need to be symmetrical.  In other words, the areas around each side of the court beyond the playing surface do not need to have the same depth of free and clear space.  From a practical standpoint, this rule may not be implemented at many of our tournaments because the area beyond the Sport Court often includes spectator seating.  When this rule is not in effect, the “old Sport Court” rule will apply – some body part must be touching the court surface to contact a ball that has gone beyond the court (USAV 9, page 33).

The Penalty area is described on the next slide.  Due to limited space at many tournaments, a Penalty Area may not be encountered very often.
