Nice shot, Slick Shots!
By Yasmine Daniels
After what seemed to be a discouraging regular season, the Slick Shots women’s volleyball team finally pulled it together for the 2012 USA Volleyball Open Championships in Salt Lake City, Utah. We began our regular season 11 strong, but along the way, lost most of our players to injury and the inability for some to travel to the tournament during the holiday weekend. Consequently, we were left with only 3 original team members, just weeks before the tournament.
Unable to find replacements within the Garden Empire, New York region, we resorted to the USA Volleyball online Player/Team matching tool which was a huge success. We managed to acquire 4 new players coming from Syracuse, Ohio, Oregon and California. We were determined to produce a talented group of women to compete on the BB level, and that we did. Our team finished 3rd in the Bronze bracket, which is something that we were all proud of, especially after not having the opportunity to play together during the regular season, as many other teams had.
When we weren’t on the court, we were exploring Utah’s many attractions. We visited the Salt Lake Mormon Temple and made sure to take many photos along the way of the beautifully covered snow mountains, visible in the distance. Our experience at the tournament allowed us to use our collective passion for volleyball to meet new people, learn about different cultures and most importantly to be a part of the biggest and most exciting volleyball party in the USA.
