Assemble the Minions!* Taking our name from the movie “Despicable Me,” the Minions (GE), a first-year team making our debut Nationals appearance, had a memorable experience at this year’s event. On the court, all of our hard work this season paid off. The team went 3-2 over the first two days to finish third in pool play and to advance to the Silver bracket. With some nail-bitingly close games, and a few come-from-behind wins, the Minions felt confident going into Monday’s matches. Although we lost in three sets to Dykstra Swingers, and then lost again on Tuesday in two close sets to I’d Hit That, we still felt our trip was a winning experience, especially for a team that had only been together for one season.

Off the court, the ladies devised a plan to Steal the Moon* and I dare say we were successful. An afternoon playing schedule allowed the team to fully appreciate the Salt Lake City nightlife. From a rooftop bar downtown, to PF Chang’s and Gracie’s, we raised a glass (or several) with our fellow GEVA players as well as with new friends from across the country, including a California volleyball enthusiast filling in one of our Outside Hitter positions. Of course, the hotel hot tub will also hold a special place in our memories, and we will often “Stretch!” in a toast to these volleyball and fun-packed days. Papoy!*
