Adults: Seeding System
[Tournament Results]
[Team Standings]
The seeding system will be used to reflect tournament results and the subsequent team rankings. The system will also be utilized by the GEVA Competition Committee to determine the proper playing level of teams!
Teams Playing Up
- The seeding system will provide the criteria needed for teams to play up a level. A team wishing to play at the higher level must be seeded in the top 25% in both total points and average of their registered playing level!
- A team must play at least 1/2 of the tournaments in any calendar month at their registered level.
Point System
The point system shall work as follows:
- Pool Play: Teams will earn points based on their final standing in pool play.
| Five Team Pool | Four Team Pool |
| 1st Place | 5 pt. | 5 pt. |
| 2nd Place | 4 pt. | 4 pt. |
| 3rd Place | 3 pt. | 2 pt. |
| 4th Place | 2 pt. | 1 pt. |
| 5th Place | 1 pt. | N/A |
- Playoffs
- 1 pt.: Winning Quarterfinals/receiving a bye
- 2 pts.: Winning Semifinals/receiving a bye
- 3 pts.: Winning Finals
- Therefore, the maximum points a team can earn is 11 in a tournament with more than two pools, 10 in two pool tournaments, and 8 for one pool tournaments (applies only to levels where the majority of tournaments are only one pool). All results from Qualified tournaments are utilized. NOTE: Points are awarded only for playoff rounds that are actually played.
Seeding System Clarifications
The following is a brief list of clarifications regarding the GEVA Seeding System:
- Whenever a tournament has a quarterfinal playoff match, the teams that win the match as well as the teams that receive a bye are awarded one point.
- No point(s) are awarded for any playoff round that does NOT occur. Two pool tournaments do NOT have quarterfinal rounds. Therefore, the maximum a team can be awarded is 10 points (if they come in first place in pool play, of course).
- In qualified tournaments where there is only one pool or there are only six teams participating, GEVA recognizes only one round for playoffs regardless if there were any others played. This is partially based on USA Volleyball tournament guidelines that specify "when round robin play qualifies teams for a championship playoff, no more than 50 percent of the teams entered and playing a pool shall advance to the playoff bracket."
- Tournaments that do not follow a "standard" format are treated like those mentioned in point c.
- There have also been questions regarding tiebreaker games. All tiebreaker games are considered part of pool play and are included in a team's pool play results. E.g. Team A is tied for second with Team B with a 5-3 record. Team A wins the tiebreaker. Their pool play record becomes 6-3 while Team B's is 5-4. Same will be applied for three-way ties. The applicable points for pool play finish are then applied (4 pts. for Team A and 3 pts. for Team B, if a five team pool). Please note that the seedings are NOT based on a team's won-lost record. They are provided only as an additional indicator to GEVA's Tournament Directors to show how well (or poorly) teams are performing in our tournaments.
- Seedings are based on three criteria. The primary indicator is average points; followed by total points then finally by tournaments played. E.g. when teams have identical averages, bias is given to the team with more total points. In the unlikely event where teams have identical records for all three of the aforementioned criteria, games won (pool play) will become the tiebreaker.
Moving Teams
- Teams will be evaluated as appropriate during the season and/or by mid-season and their playing level adjusted accordingly. NO TEAM will be moved after March 1st and teams will not be moved more than twice a season.
- Teams are required to play at least half their tournaments in a given calendar month at their registered playing level. Teams that are performing above or below par at their registered level and are within the aforementioned guidelines will be moved up or down respectively!
- Teams may request a transfer to another level by submitting a written request to the Adult Competition Committee. Teams must provide an explanation for their movement request. Each request will be reviewed on a case by case basis.
Moving Teams Up
GEVA will utilize the following criteria for the mandatory moving of teams up:
- A team which makes it out of pool play in a higher level tournament two times.
- A team which wins a tournament at a higher level will be immediately moved up.
- A team that wins any three qualified tournaments at its registered playing level. Qualified tournaments are tournaments that consist of no less than (2) pools of competition per skill levels except those levels where the majority of tournaments consist of (1) pool.
- Teams will be returned to their original level if they do not win at least three games in each of their first two qualified tournaments at their new level.
Moving Teams Down
GEVA will utilize the following criteria for the mandatory moving of teams down:
- A team that wins two or less games in three consecutive qualified tournaments.
- Results of the first (2) tournaments of the sanctioned season will not be used as criteria for moving teams down.
- Teams being moved down will be placed in the 67th percentile of the new level.
