GEVA PRIDE CONTINUES and congratulations are in order for players John Curaro and Mark Beckmann for winning the 14U Bronze medal (3rd place overall) this week at the 2017 USA Beach Volleyball Junior National Championships in Siesta Key, Florida.

Despite being seeded 16th (out of 24 teams) at the start of the tournament, the boys were able to advance their position after a successful two days of pool play. The duo earned a spot in the single elimination, 12-team Gold bracket playoffs.  The quarterfinal match was a nailbiting 22-20 come-from-behind win.   The semi final match then put the team against the current top 14U team in the Country (two USA Beach Junior National team members).   While Beckmann and Curaro played a great match, with many exciting plays, the experienced team from California/Florida went on to win the match and the tournament.

Beckmann and Curaro then faced a very strong team from Canada for third place overall and the Bronze medal!   Given this is only their second beach tournament playing together, this pair and GEVA overall have a bright future ahead in beach volleyball  GO GEVA

Also note that USA Volleyball has placed Beach HP under the National HP Umbrella

Will you have what it takes to compete next season ?

Junior Director Bill Doyle and Officials Chair Tim Countryman who represented GEVA at the USAV annual meetings, with Margie Mara who had just won the Friar Award, USA Volleyball’s highest service award. Margie is retiring later this year, but her service has touched each of us directly or indirectly through her roles of overseeing Region Services as well as Sport Development, Coaching Education and Officials’ Development programs. She is the one we always went to when we needed an answer.

Oleg Chinyayev, Former GEVA Player, Silver Medalist USAV Nationals 45+ Division

GEVA would like to recognize a former GEVA player, Oleg Chinyayev, who won a silver medal in the Men's 45+ Division at this year's USA Volleyball Open National Championships.

Oleg was born in 1970 in Tashkent (Uzbekistan) and started playing volleyball at an early age.  By the age of 16, he joined the USSR National Juniors team.  He played a few seasons in the Top Soviet League in the late 80s. He immigrated to the USA by the end of the 90s.  He organized a volleyball team from skilled Western European players and started to play in local tournaments.  From 2002-2007 his team Brooklyn HES played mostly in GEVA tournaments.  He was actively playing volleyball and participating in local tournaments for at least 17 years.  He put in a lot of effort to reach excellent physical shape after the age 40.

This year he played in the 2017 USA Volleyball Open National Championships with team Canada Fog and won a silver medal in the 45+ division.  It was his first appearance at the National Championships. With the volleyball skills and physical ability that he showed, he was invited to join Team USA 45+ to participate in in the 2017 Global Cup World  Senior Volleyball Championship, being held in Loutraki, Greece in August.
